Dear Dancers,

What an incredible sight Scotland has been these past few days, blanketed in a thick layer of snow. Wading through it each day has made walks along the river quite an adventure. Birds picking at the ice and the frosted foliage create a magical, if chilly, experience. The trees glisten with frost, and children sledging on the hill in Grant Park add to the charm.I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and Hogmanay, whether you celebrated or simply enjoyed the season.

The Winter Gathering was a highlight for me, and hosting it alongside Barbara Swetina was truly an honour. Dancing with the group brought so much joy! On Christmas Eve, Barbara led a beautiful Austrian/German-inspired session in the Sunshine Room, where I taught the Shepherd’s Dance. We shared Carols and stories about different cultural traditions during this time of year, making it a warm and cozy evening. Barbara and community member Carolin brought such heart to the season.Hosting the Winter Gathering was so much fun, especially the lively “12 Days of Christmas” with Yvonne Cuneo.

Yvonne will be joining us for the next Centrepiece on 25th January, where presenters from around the globe will come together for a Celtic celebration. Details are below we hope you can join us.Also on Christmas Eve, I helped with a slideshow for the local church’s midnight service. Hearing “In the Bleak Midwinter” played on the flute was a special moment, though I admit it made me want to get up and dance!

The festive season has been very joyful for me.In Memory of Phil Smith
It is with sadness that we share the passing of South African teacher Phil Smith. Phil graced The Centrepiece twice, and I was fortunate to chat with him on Zoom a number of times. His community based dances were inspiring, and he was planning to return this year. We will honour him in our January session and share one of his dances to celebrate his legacy. Our deepest sympathies go out to all who knew him. His YouTube channel is at the bottom of the page
